  Former Sen. Jesse Helms, who built a career along the fault lines of racial politics and battled liberals, Communists and the occasional fellow Republican during 30 conservative years in Congress, died on the Fourth of July.

• Montgomery pleads guilty to federal drug charges
  Olympic Gold didn't tilt the scales of justice for Tim Montgomery; he will face at least five more years in prison.  The 33-year-old former track star pleaded guilty to federal heroin distribution charges.
  
• Temporary flight restriction over Great Dismal Swamp
  More than 4,300 acres burn in the Great Dismal Swamp, in what's classified as a ground fire, smoldering below the surface.

• 17-year-old charged in teen's homicide may be tried as adult
  The teen's parents stood before a judge as he heard the charges: Murder and Use of a Firearm. Also in the court was the victim's mother Marie Abbott, who said afterwards she just wants "justice for my son." 
  
• Army cooperates with W.Va. in murder case
  The Army says Spc. Daniel Smith, 22, of Newport News, Va., and Pfc. Stephen Wilson, 19, of Cincinnati went AWOL in early May from Fort Drum in New York, where they served as infantrymen with the 10th Mountain Division
  
• Father arrested, charged in infant daughter's death
  Norfolk police arrested 34-year-old Jeremy Adam Kelly in the 1100 blk. of West Ocean View Ave. Kelly is charged with Felony Child Neglect in the death of his 9-month-old daughter.
